What is Claude

Claude is an artificial intelligence developed by Anthropic. It was built on the principle of being "helpful, harmless, and honest." This is not just a marketing slogan but the foundation of the entire approach to training the model. Claude is guided by principles that help it avoid toxic and discriminatory responses, refuse to help people with illegal or unethical activities, and generally behave transparently and responsibly. This approach is called Constitutional AI. It means that instead of rigid rules like "don't do this or that," the model is trained to understand human values and independently make balanced decisions in complex situations. Thanks to this, Claude doesn't just follow instructions but is also able to explain why it acts one way and not another. This makes it a more predictable and reliable partner for work.

Many people think of AI assistants as an advanced search bar: ask a question, get an answer. Claude works differently. It can work with you iteratively, maintain the context of a long conversation, and adapt its style and approach to your needs. Claude's specific capabilities include: summarizing large volumes of text, searching and analyzing information, collaboratively creating texts in any genre, answering complex professional questions, helping with programming in various languages, math and logic tasks, and strategic analysis and planning. Claude's context window exceeds two hundred thousand tokens, which corresponds to approximately five hundred pages of text. This allows you to load an entire report, book, or set of documents into a single conversation, and Claude will consider all this material with every response. Think of it not as a tool for one-off tasks, but as a thinking partner that helps you work through complex problems.

One of Claude's key differences from other AI assistants is steerability. You can give Claude precise instructions regarding personality, tone, style, and behavior, and it will follow them. For example, you can ask it to respond strictly formally, or conversely, informally and with humor. You can assign a role: "act like an experienced marketer" or "respond like a technical editor." You can specify a format: "bullet points only" or "explain as if I'm a beginner." Users who have actively worked with Claude note that it produces harmful or irrelevant responses significantly less often compared to other models. Collaborativeness means that Claude doesn't just execute commands but participates in a dialogue: it asks clarifying questions, suggests alternatives, and points out contradictions in a task. This makes working with it similar to collaborating with a colleague rather than using a search engine.

Anthropic has created several ways to access Claude so that it fits into your usual workflow rather than requiring you to switch to a separate tool. Claude apps are available for all plan types: Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Your conversations, projects, settings, and memory sync across all devices when you sign in. This means a conversation started on a laptop can be continued on a phone without losing context. For most users, the main interface is the web version at Claude dot ai, but there are also full-featured desktop applications for Mac and Windows, as well as mobile apps for iOS and Android. All of them run on the same model with identical capabilities. The choice of interface depends only on where it is most convenient for you to work at the moment.

Claude is available through four main interfaces, each optimized for a specific type of task. The first is Claude dot ai, along with the associated mobile and desktop apps. This is the main way of interacting for most people: questions and answers, brainstorming, creating and editing documents, analyzing files. This very interface is the focus of this course. The second is Claude Code. This is an agentic developer tool that can directly edit files on your computer, execute terminal commands, and create git commits. The third is Claude's integration with Slack. It lets you talk to Claude directly inside your workspace: through mentions in threads or through a dedicated AI assistant section. Claude can search for context in your Slack channels, direct messages, and files. The fourth is Claude for Excel. This is a side panel in Microsoft Excel, where Claude can read, analyze, modify, and create new spreadsheets directly in your working file.
